Regular Exercise is The Secret to Young-Looking Skin and Aging

Our skin is made up of the epidermis (the top layer), the dermis (the middle layer, and the subcutaneous layers deep underneath the surface of our skin. One of the most important aspects of your skin is how to take care of it and keep it young looking. Skin-aging changes are the result of your skin's inability to repair itself.

When damage occurs to the cell membranes, your skin becomes rough and coarse. It damages the deep collagen stores, making your skin appear sallow, wrinkled, and not elastic any more. Additional damage to your skin pigment melanocytes can cause brown spots. Our skin has can correct some of this cellular damage, and the very best way is to minimize UV exposure, get regular exercise, and to eat a skin-healthy diet. Here are a few eating and stress reduction suggestions for you to incorporate into your daily life to help your skin stay young-looking and vibrant:

  1. Papaya – Because the papaya has 75% more vitamin C than the average orange. As vitamin C is a huge stress buster, the papaya has 200 mg., enough to stop the flow of stress hormones in laboratory rats.

  2. Peppermint Tea – Just the smell of peppermint helps you to focus and has been proven to boost performance. This is the drink of choice for drivers who need to stay awake, and for students who are burning the midnight oil.

  3. Pumpkin Seeds – I’ve been telling you about pumpkin. The high magnesium levels in the seeds work to diminish stress related symptoms such as headaches, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, high blood pressure, and nervousness.
  4. Avocados – Full of healthy monounsaturated fat, avocados also have potassium which combats high blood pressure.
  5. Salmon – Those good old Omega-3 fatty acids help to prevent heart disease. These fats also battle that stress hormone, cortisol. Lastly, salmon contains tryptophan, which helps to promote a good night’s sleep.
  6. Almonds – Also full of monounsaturated fats, these have calming Vitamin E, soothes the savage beast inside of us.
  7. Oatmeal – Stress is more likely to affect those who have low serotonin levels. Eating oatmeal helps keep your blood sugar balanced and your serotonin levels optimal.

Party Ready

There is nothing worse than planning what you're going to wear to a holiday party and then discovering that you can't wear it. You didn't make sure the garment had been mended, cleaned, and stored properly, and it is now unsuitable for the party.

A really good habit to get into is to take your party clothes to the cleaners as soon as your event or party is over. That way you know the next time you're preparing for your party, you won't have to make a second rate choice in what you're going to wear.

We all have clothing that makes us feel really great. These are the garments that we need to wear to a party, or to an office gathering, where we want to look and feel our very best. Be prepared!

Holiday Baking

There is no tradition quite as bonding as sharing the task of holiday baking with family and friends. Because our society is often spread far apart, you might consider inviting some young people you know from your neighborhood or church to help you with your holiday baking. They'll learn some of your special recipes, and you'll have company you may be missing during this time of year.

Organic Foods Worth the $

Some organic foods seem hideously expensive, causing the consumer to wonder if any of them are really worth the premium price. Here are a few that really are worth it:

  • Apples – non-organic are subjected to over 36 pesticides, this is an excellent organic choice.

  • Baby food – your child's immune system is just developing and great care should be taken when subjecting him/her to chemicals.

  • Cantaloupe – still shows traces of carcinogen Dieldrin, an insecticide banned in 1974. It's roots still pull it out of soil treated with the insecticide.

  • Cucumbers are ranked as the 12th most contaminated food and suspected for cancer risk.

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched, but are felt in the heart."

Keep Warm and Safe

Bitter winter weather can be dangerous if you're not wise about how you keep warm. It's never too late to have your furnace inspected, and be sure that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Even a fireplace can put your family in danger if the chimney has not been swept and inspected. Fill any gaps that allow cold air to seep into your home. Consider installing an air exchanger to ensure a supply of fresh air inside your home, especially during the winter.

Looking for Ways to Stay Fit?

Recent studies have proven that you will exercise longer and better if it is done to music. People who walk or jog to music maintain a rhythm and pace that they would not otherwise be able to do.

Additional ideas for combining music and exercise include dancing, dancing exercise like Zumba, the old standby Jazzercise, and a new face on an age-old activity, belly dancing. Belly dancing will not only help keep you fit, but will improve your flexibility, improve your self-confidence, and heighten your sense of sex-appeal.

Belly dancing works with your body rather than against it, strengthening your spine, abdomen, pelvis, trunk and neck. The gentle repetitive movements are hypnotic and effective.

Support Small Business

The backbone of our economy, small business, has been suffering as much as anyone else. This year, they have started to fight back, instituting the first ever, Small Business Saturday, the day after Black Friday. This initiative was actually sparked by American Express who recognized that the number one problem of small businesses in America is that they simply are not getting enough people in the door.

Further, Amex is offering "mom and pop" shops free advertising on Facebook if they join the program. Local retailers are often overlooked in the mad dash for the best holiday deals, getting lost in the shuffle.

It is hoped that raising awareness this way will increase the number of shoppers to our nations' small businesses.

It has been estimated that if everyone spends between $50 and $100 of their holiday spending in a local small business rather than in one of the big box stores, at the mall, or on-line, we would take a huge step toward turning around our economy.

What will you do to help small businesses in America? Hopefully you'll shop at one of them this month.

Grimm's Fairy Tale, Hansel and Gretel, inspired the craft of the Gingerbread House.
