Highlights

Highlights add great interest to hair of most colors. What you may not realize, however, is that even naturally brown hair can benefit from highlights. In fact, most natural looking hair has variations on the basic hair color, and the easiest way to accomplish that is through the use of highlights.

Not all highlights are created equal. If you're naturally brown, you probably have very fine and delicate hair. You will want to make sure your hair is carefully conditioned prior to your highlighting appointment.

For those of you who have a dye in your hair, it is a little more difficult to highlight your hair, but you want those natural looking highlights and lowlights that make hair so beautiful. There are many different shades of highlighting color, and you want to spend some time with your stylist carefully reviewing your hair, skin, and eye color for a blended, natural look. This is not to be a rushed process. Spending time now will save heartache later on.
Highlights need to look subtle and smooth. You really don't want drastic color differences. In order to do this the best way, you'll want to choose a highlighting color that is no more than two shades lighter than the base hair color you have. For those of you who have very, very light brown or blonde hair, you may want to go for low-lights. Low-lights give the drama you're looking for without looking artificial.
If your skin is warm, you'll have peach and golden undertones in your skin. The highlight colors you'll want to choose are light gold, bronze, caramel, or very subtle shades of red that work with warm skin tones.
For cool skin tones, those who have blue or gray undertones to their skin do better with ash, beige, wheat, taupe highlights that is subtle and neutral.
If you have a ruddy undertone to your skin, you're a little more red than most. You want to steer clear of highlights that are red as this will only draw attention to a color in your skin you probably want to neutralize. Use beige, gold or honey brown shades for your highlights.
If you take care of your highlights, they should last about three months. To maximize the beauty of your highlights, always use a shampoo that is designed for colored hair, make sure to rinse and condition your hair as soon as possible after swimming in a chlorinated pool.

Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful,
we must carry it with us or we find it not.

The Benefit of Vitamin D

Increased intake of Vitamin D benefits us in ways we never imagined. Before the worries of skin cancer from exposure to the sun, there was little talk of insufficient levels of
Vitamin D. Once we were told to use sun-screen anytime we will be exposed to the UV rays of the sun lower levels of Vitamin D resulted.
How can this hurt you? Vitamin D is responsible for heart health, preventing rickets, for lowering blood pressure, and preventing cancer. In addition, Vitamin D plays a role in preventing the development of Type I and Type II diabetes, and in improving insulin response as well.
For women, additional benefits of Vitamin D include help when looking to lose weight. Women who take 1000 IU of Vitamin D a day saw a significant reduction in their belly fat compared to women who did not take the supplement. In addition, A recent study has linked Vitamin D intake to improved pelvic muscle tone and decreased occurrences of incontinence leaks.
It is certainly possible to get good amounts of Vitamin D in a healthy balanced diet that includes dairy. However, if you feel you might be running low 1000 IU per day helps. Spending five minutes a day in the sun without sunscreen also boosts your Vitamin D levels.

Enjoy Your Vacation

Summer vacation is not to be trifled with. In order to stay healthy, let’s cover a couple tips designed to keep you from getting sick as you travel.
Rental cars have tons of germs that are never wiped off. Take a packet of disinfecting wipes and as soon as you get into your rental, wipe down all hard surfaces, steering wheel, dash, gear shift, door locks, etc.
Another germ laden area is your hotel room. Don’t use the paper covered glasses. Get some disposable cups. Wipe off the TV remote.
Mini-mart soda dispensers are often contaminated with germs. Be safe and stick with bottles and cans for your beverages.

Pet Fur Buster

Want to keep your couch fur free without breaking too much of a sweat? Take an old polar fleece jacket or blanket and cut it up into “Pet Patrol” rags. Rub the cloth over the couch or chair and the static buildup in the fabric will cause the fur to cling to the polar fleece fabric. This works on tile floors as well.

Self-Esteem

Having good self-esteem means you’re more likely to achieve what you want to in this life. However, if you’re not quite as sure of yourself as you’d like to be you could be sacrificing happiness at work, at home, in your relationships.
Are you the type of person who always apologizes when something goes wrong, whether or not you were responsible? The next time you’re tempted to do this, stop for just a moment and evaluate your actual responsibility. If you spend too much time trying to please other people, you’re actually sacrificing yourself. Make a careful assessment of the situation before you apologize. It could be that someone else needs to be saying “I’m sorry.”
Are you more inclined to pass the buck? Do you never accept responsibility for a problem? This is a self-esteem issue too. People will lose respect for you and you’ll end up more and more alone. Again, evaluate the situation and see who really is responsible for the problem.

Clean Your Keyboard

The last time I let someone use my computer they’d obviously just eaten lunch and left some sticky and oily prints all over. Wet a cotton swab with facial astringent, squeeze excess liquid and wipe it on and in-between the keys. This will clean it in a jiffy! Alcohol will work as well.

Melons – Summer’s Gift:

The beauty of summer is that melons of all shapes and sizes are abundant and delicious. In addition to great taste, melons also provide benefits that you might not be aware of. The lovely cool green honeydew melon can help to prevent heat fatigue because of the potassium level contained in the fruit. The fluid and electrolytes help you to keep your cool during the heat of the summer.
Watermelon has to be a great favorite for summer. The benefit to you is that it is very helpful to your skin. Watermelon is packed with antioxidants Vitamin A, C and lycopene, all of which nourish the skin, build collagen, and prevent wrinkles and age spots caused by free radical damage due to sun exposure.
Cantaloupe is one more lovely melon that you need to pick based on a heavy weight for its size, and a lovely fruity smell at the end where it was once attached to the stem of the plant. Cantaloupe contains beta carotene that combines with the high water content of the fruit that helps to flush fat and toxins from the body.
Keep cubed melon pieces available on the middle shelf of your refrigerator to help you to beat the heat of the summer and provide wonderful benefits to your health and skin.

Ringworm

Did you know that ringworm isn’t caused by a worm at all? It’s actually a fungus, much like athlete’s foot, that causes a round mark on the skin. Children are especially prone to ringworm, and it is very contagious. It is found in locker rooms and swimming pools and is spread by skin to skin contact.
The best way to prevent a ringworm infection is to not share sports gear or towels. Wear sandals in locker rooms and at the pool. Keep your skin clean and dry.

Cream of Broccoli Soup

Broccoli is plentiful in the summer, and oh so healthy. Here’s a quick recipe that you’re sure to love:
Saute 1 chopped onion and 2 stalks chopped celery in 2 Tbs. olive oil. Add 3 cups chicken broth, the sauted vegetables and 7 – 9 cups broccoli florets. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Either use a hand blender, or pour the soup into a blender and puree in batches. You can make it very smooth, or you can leave some larger chunks of broccoli, depending on your taste.
Melt 3 Tbs. butter and add 3 Tbs. flour to make a roux, cooking for about 3 minutes. Add 2 cups of milk to this, stirring continuously. Add this thick
creamy mixture to the pureed vegetabloes, stir together and it’s soup! Serve with some crusty bread for a delicious and easy summertime supper.
