The Ultimate in Pampering

More and more salons are making room for this ultimate pampering session, the pedicure. If you haven't had one yet, you're in for the treat of your life. If you've never had one, ask for recommendations from your friends who have had good experiences.

Pedicures are designed to keep your feet looking beautiful, but did you know that it can actually be healthy for you too? We're on our feet just about all day long, and they take quite a beating. Yes, a pedicure will make your feet look better, but you'll actually feel better afterward.

When you're heading out to your pedicure appointment, don't forget to bring a pair of open-toed shoes or sandals as you don't want to ruin your new polish job. I'd recommend wearing a pair of Capri pants rather than long pants or a short skirt as you'll be seated on an elevated chair while your feet are being worked on.

Oour manicurist will fill the foot basin with warm water and begin soaking your feet. Old nail polish will be removed first, and then the shaping and cutting of your toenails will begin. Some manicurists do this before soaking. Your feet should soak for about five minutes before they begin working on your cuticles. Cuticle lotion will be applied which helps to further soften them and make them easier to manage. Dead skin will be removed.

The next step is to remove all rough skin and any callous on your heels, on the soles of your feet, and sometimes on your big toe. Sometimes your skin will be especially dry and a callous lotion will be applied to help soften this dead and hardened tissue. At no time should you feel pain during your pedicure. If you do, SPEAK UP.

You will next be given the opportunity to have a sugar scrub, a paraffin wrap, or a foot and calf massage. These services usually cost a little extra, but are a wonderful experience. Finally, your feet are dried and polish of your choice is applied. Our manicurists will create designs of flowers or geometric designs to the big toe of each foot. Some designs include small beads or jewels and add just a bit more glamour and glitz.

Once you're done, it is customary to tip about 15 to 20 percent, 30 is suggested if you received an especially lengthy foot and calf massage. This is a great treat for bridesmaids, for birthdays, anniversaries, or just a girl's day. More and more men are learning the pleasure of pedicures as well. Hey, it's healthy!

Run Faster…Run Longer

Summer’s over and we know we still need to keep in shape, but the days are getting shorter and cooler and maintaining our summertime workout schedule is beginning to falter.

You can increase your endurance and your performance by putting on your headset and listening to music. It has to be music you enjoy and that has a beat that synchronizes with your pace. Trey Songz, Beyounce’, and Snoop Dogg are some of the artists who were included in a recent study.

Music is as effective as a drug! By listening to music, your perception of effort is reduced, making you feel as though you aren’t working as hard as you do. By changing this perception, you actually work harder and your endurance increases by as much as 15%.

What you need to do is to find music that matches your desired stride or rhythm. This could explain why people can dance all night and never feel tired, but when it comes to a 30 minute jog they resent every step. Jazzercise and is highly energized music to motivate their participants.

Everyone can benefit from this knowledge. Just make sure you don’t neglect safety measures when wearing a headset.

Do You Want to Live Longer?

Smile!

Researchers at Michigan's Wayne State University found that people who don't worry about those crow's feet that erupt around the eyes and smile and laugh with their entire face live an average of seven years longer than people who just smile with their mouth.

Take a look at pictures taken of you when you're enjoying yourself. Are your eyes smiling? A whole face smile includes all the muscles of the face, especially those around the eyes. I have friends who say that they limit the muscles they use when they smile because they don't want wrinkles. I say, bring on those wrinkles! And let our Skin Specialist get rid of them.

Learning to smile this way is a learned trait, so practice smiling in the mirror so that even your eyes reflect your happiness. People who smile are more successful too!

Don't Eat Watermelon Seeds!

Were you told not to eat the seeds of a watermelon otherwise you’d have a watermelon grow inside you? I was! Now I wonder if there is an element of truth in it…after all, Ron Sveden learned last month that the worsening of his lung condition wasn’t cancer as he suspected, but a pea growing in his lung!

Top Five Dog Breeds in the U.S.

For the past 19 years the Labrador Retriever has been the most popular family pet in the United States. This friendly canine lives only to please its owners and is an excellent pet around children. Here is the rest of the list:

1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd
3. Yorkshire Terrier
4. Golden Retriever
5. Beagle

With the exception of the Yorkie, all the other breeds of dog have served in law enforcement capacity as guard dogs, drug dogs, or border patrol.

Dispel Anger

Thirty minutes a day of exercise is important for your physical health and well-being. It’s also good for your emotional state. A recent study has proven that when you become angry about something, if you take a brisk thirty minute walk or bike ride that anger disappears almost miraculously. This even works ahead of time. If you know you’re heading into a meeting that is bound to be frustrating, if you exercise for thirty minutes prior to the meeting you’ll have virtually no rise in anger! Exercise is a magic pill when it comes to controlling that hot emotion.

Pumpkin as the Fountain of Youth

Eating pumpkin is a healthy habit. Use the puree in soups, stews, spaghetti sauce, and in chili. A couple tablespoons go a long way toward keeping you healthy and your skin soft, supple, and younger-looking.

Here’s a tip to keep your skin glowing even more. Mix two tablespoons of pumpkin puree with two tablespoons of crushed pineapple. Warm your face with a heated washcloth. Immediately apply the pumpkin/pineapple mixture to your face and neck. The enzymes in both improve your skin, making your face soft and smooth.

When is it OVERmedicating?

Anne Applebaum on Slate.com asks the question whether Tom Sawyer and his buddy Huck Finn would have been put on medication for their behavior. We have diagnoses today that encompass oppositional defiant disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder that would likely have been applied to the two boys. While advances in medicine and understanding of behavior are important, we must not lose sight of originality.

I wonder where we’d be without the original thinking and creative genius of people like Tom Sawyer, Huck Fin, Martin Luther King, Pablo Picasso, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Frederick Doughlas. Each of these men was considered to be “abnormal” and yet the world has benefited from them.

Anxiety

We live in a world where deadlines loom, alarms blare, phones ring, and we feel as though we’re constantly in a state of being hyper-alert. As a result, we’re a population of people with high blood pressure, eating disorders, increasing levels of addictions, and depression. Anxiety and stress are two huge factors that hinder our pursuit of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Here are a few tips to help reduce your feelings of anxiety:

• Give yourself more time. Leave early for appointments and set your deadlines early so that you have more time than you thought.
• Rub your palms together as if you are trying to keep them warm, then press them gently against your eyes.
• Count backwards by 3, starting at 100. This is especially good when you’re having a nighttime panic attack and can’t sleep.
• Eat whole grains that boost the level of serotonin in your brain.

Soften Your Skin

After a summer of walking around in sandals and on the coarse sand of the beach our heels have paid a steep price. They’re rough, dry, and downright un-sexy! Elbows, too, need attention. A quick, invigorating fix is to cut a lemon in half and freeze both pieces for about half an hour. You don’t want it frozen solid, just partially frozen.

While you’re waiting, soak your feet in a warm water bath. Take the lemon halves, dip them in sugar and gently buff those offending heels. The sugar will gently smooth the skin and the lemon juice will invigorate you for a night of dancing! Use your favorite foot cream to moisturize afterward.
